St. Ali, EC1 – A great new offering from Australia

Following our very early tour of Smithfield Market last week, Test 2 and I went for breakfast at the newly opened Australian coffee house, St. Ali, on Clerkenwell Road. Continue reading to see what we thought!

The laidback atmosphere is great. We asked for tea while we had a look at the breakfast menu. To my surprise, when it arrived, it looked exactly like a Montessori Practical Life pouring activity! I personally have never seen tea presented this way. It tasted lovely, a good English Breakfast tea. Lots of choices when it comes to coffee, the St. Ali speciality, but as non-coffee drinkers Test Kitchens can’t comment unfortunately. Please comment if you have tried them!

So, Test2 went for one her favourites – poached eggs on toast, entitled “The Usual Suspects” at St. Ali. They were served with kasundi, an Indian tomato relish.

I went for the “Dutch Oven” (cute!), which is home-baked beans served with sourdough toast, lemon and mint infused ricotta and rocket- with an optional poached egg.

My beans were delicious, balanced just right, a tiny bit creamy, tomatoey and spicy – but very, very filling! The serving size was massive. The ricotta mentioned on the menu was nominal, but just enough.

We will definitely be returning to St. Ali in the near future, for breakfast and to try lunch and dinner too!

Test1, xxx
